Shubman Gill, the captain of the Gujarat Titans, shared insights about a tense exchange he had with the on-field umpires regarding a DRS decision during their thrilling match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Ahmedabad on Friday.
In the 14th over of Hyderabad's chase for a challenging target of 224 runs, Abhishek Sharma found himself in a precarious position, prompting Gill and his team to appeal for LBW.
The umpire's lack of response led the Titans to opt for a review. However, the DRS footage only displayed the impact and wicket information, leaving the ball's pitch location unclear.
Gill's Reaction to the Incident
Gill seemed visibly frustrated and engaged in an animated discussion with the umpires. Abhishek Sharma intervened to help calm Gill, allowing the game to continue.
"There was a bit of a discussion between me and the umpire. Emotions run high when you give your all, and it's natural to feel strongly about such moments," Gill remarked during the post-match presentation.
Gujarat Titans' Dominance in the Match
Despite the brief altercation, the match was largely dominated by the Titans. They set a formidable score of 224/6, largely thanks to the explosive performances from their top order.
Gill, along with Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler, focused on rotating the strike effectively, resulting in only 22 dot balls—one of the lowest counts in IPL history.
Gill on Team Dynamics
The Titans' captain acknowledged that there was no specific strategy in place, but rather a shared understanding among the trio.
"We didn't plan for just 22 dot balls in 20 overs. Our only discussion was to continue playing the way we have been. The pitch isn't easy for hitting sixes, but with the way Sai, Jos, and I play, we have a good understanding to keep the scoreboard moving," he explained.
"We never discussed needing one of us to stay; we are all eager for runs and focused on what benefits the team most," he added.
GT Moves Closer to Playoffs Qualification
In terms of the match outcome, the Gujarat Titans upheld their perfect record of defending targets over 200 runs at home. Their 38-run victory over the struggling Sunrisers was propelled by an explosive start from Sudharsan (48) and Gill (76), complemented by Buttler's impressive 64 off 37 balls.
The Sunrisers' attempt to chase down 225 turned into a rout, as the Titans hunted in packs, leading to regular wickets and pushing Hyderabad to the brink of elimination after their 38-run defeat.
